The decision to end up with a gable roof was entirely dependant upon what covering was to be chosen. I was not pleased with the algae and moss stained asphalt shingled roofs I saw in my travels around the valley, here in NS. I have always liked the look of a steel roof. If done properly, steel will outlast any shingled roof.

We used Ideal Steel 24g. in ON for the Brighton woodworking shop main roof. After 22 years, it still showed neither rust nor footprints. The issue is one of appearance vs. function. I chose to spend a tick more payola and do this roof properly. It was trussed out with engineered trusses and then strapped with 2 x 4’s @ 16″ centres. Then the entire shebang was sheathed with 1/2″ fir ply and nailed only on the strapping with 2″ nails of a nailing gun (thanks Nathan).

The point to make here is that every particle of metal than dangles into the attic space is a potential candidate for dripping moisture. This condensate will in time, deposit a great deal of water down into the billowy soft blown cellulose insulation of R80, that will go here.

All fascia, drip edges, valleys and screws are to be of the same colour as the roofing metal. Our eyesight is the most powerful sense receptor humans have. If everything ‘looks’ purrfect, not a mention is given. Spill one colour outside the acceptable range or pull one screw too tight, distort a 12″ or longer section of metal and there will be hell to pay for a very long time.

I am in the process of deciding now the soffit material. While I know that most new construction uses PVC or vinyl, I had always used aluminum. PVC or poly vinyl chloride is one of the most poisonous substances we humans manufacture as it releases toxins into our common atmosphere for untold generations to absorb later.

Yes, I know how ravenous Canadian mining companies are around the world and also here at home with the smelters on the Gulf of St. Lawrence with their attendant pollution of the beluga whales. There is no answer for much of these practices we humans have brought into being.
