Main entrance finished sunburst replete with ubiquitous, but seldom seen green flash.

Main entrance finished sunburst replete with ubiquitous, but seldom seen green flash.

Actually, the only aspect China had in this sunburst, is the manufacture of some Bosch power tools. Boy, our culture made a serious faux pas when we elected to have China etc. manufacture our goods. But that’s another person’s blog. (?) The shingles are temporarily dyed by using the Lifetime Preservative treatment from Bring Cash, oops, I meant to say BC. The shingles will eventually turn a silver-gray, just as if they had not been dipped at all in a mineral bath. To view more info about the “green flash” go to this NASA site: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap021110.html This NASA site is one of jayöh’s faves, especially for daily images of our Universe, through the eyes of the Hubble and other seeing eyes in the sky.

Setting up the boardwalk to build in the air.

Setting up the boardwalk to build in the air.

This is the beginning of the final gable of 5.

Safety, a freeway of movement, a work bench and tool equipped. Thanks be to the laws of physics, i.e., as we know them.

A foggy damp morning in late Oct. preparing the backing support for the largest sunburst which is 19′ 6″ long! Autumn was well advanced by now and I became quite enthralled with the vistas from my air born vantage point on the staging/scaffolding.

Really hard to take vista, coming in the 800' long driveway to work each AM before 8 through Sept. and Oct.

Strapping the gable end with 1-1/4" x 2-1/8" PT strapping.

Strapping the gable end with 1-1/4″ x 2-1/8″ PT strapping.

Notice that each course of strapping is chalk lined for consistency. It’s part and parcel of the job to be professional about what we do.

A proper rain screen. Safety net screw, 1 of 4.
Here's all that supports my bawdy in the air along with 1000 lbs of spruce planking and the necessary bldg materials.

It’s difficult to believe that these 4 roofing screws are all that keeps the boardwalk on the roof and suspended. In terms of the laws of physics, its entirely the shear strength of the steel screws. However, the frictional proximity of the fastened piece plays a part as well.

Love this fibreglas reinforced tape and the spruce spacer, for the vertical siding on the gable.

Notice the orange dry line under the siding pieces. I lay on my side for each piece to see this line, up close and personal, using my leg to steady the long pieces and set the first stabilizing nail in place.

One last look Etienne, Anthony and Andrew. From this vantage point, I could not resist a parting shot of the great care and craftsmanship in the application of the steel roof. Many thanks and blessings fellahs your way.

The SS ring nail nail on the left did not receive a drilled pilot hole. It splits the 5/8″siding if not pre-drilled.

This is what happens when I rush the fixing. First off, the nail to the right which as pre-drilled missed the edge of the PT strapping. I rushed and popped a nail in, a tick higher on this sunburst ray and it split the pine. The nail heads are to be left proud, *not* countersunk as that crushes the wood fibres and that bashing has the potential to introduce water into a broken paint shield and cause eventual rot. The split, she’s an easy fix with the supplied Cape Cod colour matched Tremco caulking. Not the point though. Read on.

Nothing less than 100% compliance! Besides, I'm a 'has-been' cabinetmaker not a carpenter and we drill before we nail or screw.

Nothing less than 100% compliance! Besides, I’m a ‘has-been’ cabinetmaker not a carpenter and we drill before we nail or screw.

Here’s how a cabinetmaker applies wood siding. He takes the time to pre-drill each and every hole prior to pounding these wretched ring nails in. Even with pre-drilling it takes all I can do to ‘chase’ the nail head from bending ’cause you nor anyone else wants to extract a bent SS ring nail. SS stands for stainless steel.  Most difficult nails I’ve ever tried to extract!

OK, now for a mini dissertation on the greater holding power of pre-drilled nails. A nail driven straight in to a piece of wood only makes microscopic tension on the two sides bounded by the direction of the wood grain. It cleaves the grain allowing only pressure on its’ top and bottom. However, if you take any nail and pre-drill 80% of the shank, the nail holds in a 360° arc or in other words, the entirety of the nail shank body grips the piece it is pinning. The holding power is magnified many times. Doubt this? Take two nails and the proper drill equipment.  Carry out your own test. Anyone can see the result of not pre-dilling in the above image of the two nails not more that 3″ apart.

16" O/C PT strapping & lath, for vertical siding on little seen west gable.

Lathed and strapped now ready for siding. What a glorious moment this was in the air!

Finished west gable in 5" channel vertical siding.

Finished west gable, #3 of 5.

No need to expend time and energy on a sunburst here when this west end will only be used for a rotary clothesline.

I have the two frieze boards and the motion detector halogen remaining to install before this is complete and the boardwalk can be retired . . . like me. Ha ha ha ha ha. Recall, “Work is love made manifest”.  I never wished to fully retire, just slow down. ‘Cept I dunno how just yet! 🙂

How does that caption go now; “Neither rain nor sleet nor snow . . . ” We ended this Sat. in late Oct. with a blizzard but I kept at it until I could see no more.
